CHARACTER STUFF
Name: Katniss Everdeen
Aliases: Mockingjay
Canon: The Hunger Games
Role: Trailblazer/political refugee from the future.
Species: Human
Gender: Female
Age: 17
Appearance: Picture! Katniss is fairly average so far as girl shapes are concerned, though she is definitely on the athletic side. She has thick, dark hair that is almost always tied into some sort of braid, and a bit of an olive tone to her skin. Her preference in dress is very simple and functional, even though lately she has been forced to step out of those habits for publicity's sake. She is described as being fairly rough around the edges before her Capitol makeover in the books, but we all know Jennifer Lawrence is a hottie, sooo.

Origin story: The important thing to know about Katniss is that she is from The Future. An offshoot timeline, or "reality shard", that is, where Earth was consumed in a nuclear war and the remains were left to form the dystopian regime of the Capitol and its Districts. The only remaining civilization in what was left of North America, it was a fragile structure built on the backs of the lowest class - the inhabitants of the twelve Districts, the people used effectively as slaves by the Capitol to fuel their frivolous and hedonistic society with raw materials and grunt labour.

Katniss arose in one of their crueler spectacles - the Hunger Games, an annual event where two children from ever district were taken to fight to the death in a highly publicized arena, something originally instated as a punishment for the District's attempt at a rebellion. Katniss offered herself in her sister's place, and while she entered the games like any other, she left after having dealt a vicious blow to the politic security of the Capitol.

And thus, she became the inspiration of a revolution.

By forcing the Capitol to bend its rules to allow both her and her friend Peeta to live, she instigated an uprising in the poorly treated Districts. Acknowledging Katniss for the figure head she was, the Capitol set out to have her killed, forcing her into a round of the Hunger Games for a second time. This time, however, the rebellion was ready. With the help of several of the other competitors, she was rescued by the rebellion to take her place as the Mockingjay, the inspiration of the movement.

Unfortunately, in the process, her home District 12 was destroyed, and Peeta was taken by the Capitol. Despite having little interest in playing the role, Katniss found the hopes of thousands resting on her shoulders. But, even as she reluctantly began to inspire the gradually forming militia, the threat of the Capitol became too great.

For hope to persist, Katniss had to stay alive. (And this is where things veer wildly away from canon.) In a last ditch effort to protect her, the scientists of District 13 found a way to send her to into the past, so that she would be safe until they could come and collect her. It was a safer timeline - an offshoot reality that would not effect the future of their own. And hopefully it was a place the Capitol would never think to look.

Frustrated with helplessness and heartbroken with loss, Katniss reluctantly settled into a life among the West Coast Trailblazers, the organization which she was given to for safe keeping. Desperate to keep herself distracted from the probably fates of her loved ones, Katniss has gradually started to work alongside the other teenage superheroes, using her amazing archery skills and futuristic gear to aid their efforts.

As with so many things, though, her heart is not fully in it. At game start she will have been living in the modern timestream for approximately five months.

Personality: Katniss would describe herself as little more but 'stubborn and good with a bow' if she had her way, but that's mostly because she has made being unapproachably taciturn into an art. She doesn't say much, but when she does, she is blunt and to the point. She has no patience for bullshit, and has difficulty pretending to be something she is not, even when the consequences for failing to do so are terrible. Which, in her story, they frequently are.

Despite this, much of her life's drama has be built around the need for her to put on an act for the crowd, even if that is perhaps one of the things she is worst at. Her survival through her first Hunger Games relied heavily on the audience believing she was deeply in love with Peeta - an act she was forced to stick to so thoroughly that despite her lack of proclivity for deception, she left him believing her feelings were true up until she told her the truth after they'd both survived. Katniss has no fondness for deceiving people, but at her core she is a survivalist. She won't hesitate to break someone's heart if it means helping them, and her, to survive.

Which is what she did. She broke Peeta's heart by admitting the truth, but she never once wavered out of pity for his feelings. She is true to herself and her goals, and when circumstance demanded that she continue acting out her false romance with Peeta in order for her and her family to survive, she did so without question. She only became closer to Peeta through gradual and genuine feelings of trust and fondness, and while her need for him as a rapport was extremely sincere, she never let his unrequited romantic feelings inform her decisions about their relationship.

Katniss has a way as coming off as much more brutal and callous than she actually is. For example, while viewing the competitors for the Quarter Quell, she coldly commented that Mags, being an old woman, would have no chance of surviving and therefore would probably not be supported by her allies. But, even while being so harshly realistic, Katniss still formed an attachment to Mags shortly after meeting her, offering to exchange knowledge and work together despite knowing that Mags would not have much to offer, and ultimately asked to ally with her in the official games. She has a hunter's eye for spotting weakness, but instead of going in the for kill, she often finds herself striving to protect and shelter instead.

She is not a social person and doesn't pretend to be - she's relied heavily on Peeta to do most of the talking throughout most of her political interactions. But despite that there is a sort of passion and fire inside of her that seems to endear her to other people, with time. While continually cautious and distrustful of other people, she is also quick with a sarcastic jibe, and loves others deeply when she allows herself to do so. The first thing she did in her story is offer herself up as tribute in the place of her sister - and she would continue to put her loved ones first again and again in the future.

Differences from canon: There isn't much difference in terms of her personality - I'm keeping the events of the Hunger Games as on course as possible. The major differences would come from this strange "escaping into the past" diversion after the events of Catching Fire, which has probably done a great deal to stress her the fuck out but also force her to come to terms with her situation in the time being. So while she is anything but relaxed, she is trying to keep herself busy and focused instead of dwelling too much on how Peeta is probably in horrible Capitol jail and her home district was set on fire. Vengeance is still in her heart, but she's being forced to keep it at a low burn for the time being. At least she won't be wasting this much time on the other side of the time gap, right?

Also since this is comix, it can generally be assumed that the technology of the Capitol and, therefore, the revolution, is just that little bit more ridiculous and flashy. The Hunger Games is usually fairly sensible with that kind of thing, so just assume things have been amped up enough to include wacky cyber bows and compact techno wings. Also, since Katniss's world is theoretically a post-apocalyptic offshoot of this one, it's not implausible that there could be some super powers and such over there too. Katniss, personally, is just awesome with a bow in ways that would be kind of OTT in real THG canon but not so much here.

Power level: C
Powers: Her "good for a sixteen year old" archery skills have been amped up to a Hawkeye or Bullseye level of "what the fuck you weren't even looking" level of accuracy, and probably doing some whack shit like making arrows curve inexplicably through the air. This is made better by the fact that she has magic science arrows that do things like burst into flame and explode on contact. Her quiver seems to generate a limitless quantity of these. It is inexplicable future tech.

Speaking of inexplicable future tech, she also has a pair of dashing technological wings. While they can be removed and are gear as opposed to a body modification, they seem capable of lifting more than their size would suggest.
